Calculate Your Infusion Strength
How Cannabutter Potency Is Calculated
To determine the strength of homemade cannabutter or cannabis oil, we calculate total available THC and distribute it across the final infused weight.
Total THC (mg) = grams × 1000 × THC% × extraction efficiency
For example, 14 grams of cannabis at 20% THC contains 2,800 mg of theoretical THC. After adjusting for an 80% extraction rate, approximately 2,240 mg remains in the final infusion. Dividing that by your total butter or oil weight gives milligrams per gram.
Most home infusions achieve between 60–85% efficiency depending on decarboxylation accuracy, temperature control, and infusion duration.
Understanding Edible Dosage
- 5mg: Beginner range
- 10-20mg: Moderate users
- 20-50mg: Experienced users
- 50mg+: High tolerance only
Because edibles metabolize differently than inhaled cannabis, effects can feel stronger and last longer. Accurate potency calculation ensures safer and more predictable experiences.
Why Precision Matters
Without measuring potency, homemade edibles often vary wildly in strength. By calculating THC per gram, you can scale recipes confidently, divide servings accurately, and maintain consistent dosing across batches.
