Hashish, often known as “hash”, is a cannabis product made up of compressed or purified preparations of trichomes.
The name hashish comes from the Arabic word ( حشيش ) which means grass. It is believed that the majority of hashish destined for the international marked originated in Morocco due to a half century boom which started in the 1960s.
What Is Hash Made From?
Hash is made from cannabinoid-rich glandular hairs known as trichomes. As well as varying amounts of cannabis flower and leaf fragments. The flowers of a mature female plant contain the most trichomes, though trichomes are also found on other parts of the plant.
Additionally, some producers of hash incorporate other elements into the mix. These other elements could be opium, herbs, or fillers such as henna. All of these variables will have an effect on one’s experience.
Taking this into account you should always try and buy your hash from a trusted source as you do not want to end up with a product that has been heavily cut with dangerous substances. To quickly test the quality of hash pass a flame over it and the surface should bubble up.
Certain strains of cannabis are cultivated specifically for their ability to produce large amounts of trichomes such as the Hash Plant.
The Effects Of Hashish
Hashish produces an amazing range of highs. This is because hash can be made from a variety of cannabis plants, meaning each strains characteristics will create a unique piece of hash producing an either sativa or indica dominant effect.
Hash made from indica flower can leave you spaced out in bed all day if you smoke too much. However sativa dominant hash is perfect for a morning pick me up but might keep you up at night. There are multiple ways to smoke this beautiful form of cannabis, it can be rolled in a joint with tobacco or smoked via a bong. If you are limited when it comes to smoking apparatus then you can even use hot knives to smoke hash.
Hash also provides a great deal of economic security for farmers in developing countries across the world. Without the subsidies that are available to western farmers, it is hard to make enough money to support your family. This is why we have seen a boom in hash production in the last 50 years. Countries such as Morocco, Lebanon and India offer there farmers very little alternative.
Due to this reason cannabis production will never be wiped out in developing countries, as it is the only way that some people can survive. You must be thinking that these farmers must be incredibly rich, however this is not the case, the farmers do not receive a high price for their crop as the bulk of the money is made by the traffickers who expertly smuggle the finished product across borders while avoiding detection from law enforcement.
Moroccan Hash
Morocco is famous for its hash production, this region produces some of the finest brown hashish in the world. Specific regions like Ketama are known worldwide specifically for their hash production and in the 90’s Morocco produced an estimated 15,000 tons of hashish which was exported to the lucrative European market.
The majority of brown hash is not soft to the touch however that does not mean it is a low quality product. It averages about 9 – 10% THC content and has an even balance of CBD, the THC in this chemical composition is the element which produces an active and cerebral high, this coupled with the CBD makes it viable for medicinal use.
Some world famous types of hash originate from this region including caramello and zerozero.
Indian/Nepalese Hash
Another region famous for its hash production is India, high quality hash can be made from the abundance of cannabis plants grown in the mountains around the country.
During hand-harvesting, live cannabis plants’ flowering buds (as opposed to dried plants/buds) are rubbed between the palms of the harvesters’ hands, and by the end of the day one has perhaps 8 or 9 grams of charas. The faster one works, the lower the quality of charas; hence to make “Malana cream” it is necessary to go very slowly and make only a few grams a day.
Nowadays production of cannabis in the Himalayas has increased with growing demand for Malana cream; the ancient art of manufacturing is disappearing under the pressure to capitalize on the domestic and international market for charas.
The resulting hash is perfect and some describe it as the best in the world, the charas is incredibly soft to the touch and has a someone spicy smell to it.
When smoked it produces an incredibly stoney high, most charas is made from indica dominant plants and this is noticeable during the smoke, the classic indica tones and backed up by the powerful body high.
